Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: After reviewing the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it’s time to check out another recent Samsung foldable, the Flip 4. The novelty of 2022 does not bring many changes compared to its predecessor: we have the same format with similar dimensions, the same screens as before, and a similar photographic set. The novelty is for the updated processor and the battery that grew. Is that just enough to justify its release? Let’s find out.

Accessories

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes in a compact package and contains only the essentials in accessories:

• Critical to open the SIM card drawer
• Protection film already applied to the screen
• 25W charger separately
• Design and connectivity

If you were already a fan of Flip 3’s design, you’d also enjoy the new foldable Galaxy. Samsung practically kept the look of before and decided to make only minor improvements, such as the metal frame that now uses a more rigid aluminium and the two pieces of glass on the outside that now have Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection.

These small changes make the device more resistant; even the gears will improve to reduce everyday wear and tear. The interior also received minor touches and now features a thinner bezel, which helps to make the new one slightly more compact.

Main Screen

The main screen is still protected by a plastic film, which you can remove, although Samsung strongly recommends that no one do this. While it helps protect the Flip 4’s screen from scratches and other damage, it leaves a crease in the middle where the folding mechanism sits, which can be a little annoying for some.

Flip

Samsung has also changed the finish of the new Flip. While the old one features a matte metal frame with a mirrored glass back, this one has the exact opposite, which will help set the device apart on store shelves. In addition, we now have violet, black, light blue and rosé to choose from in the colour options.

Devices

The Flip 4 is IPX8 certified, as we have on the Fold 4, which means that the device can be wet and even submerged for a maximum of 1.5 m as long as it does not spend more than 30 minutes underwater. However, it doesn’t have dust resistance as we have in the S22 line models, so avoid sandy places, so you don’t damage the device’s gears.

The new folding continues with only two cameras on the outside, and they are in the same piece of glass that protects the external panel and now has reinforced protection. Regardless of which colour you choose, this small part will always be black to help hide the external screen when turned off.

Metal Rings

Samsung has added small metal rings around the two cameras, which makes them stand out a little more than the rest of the back. The metal rim around the two pieces of glass will also reduce, but the gap between the two parts of the Flip remains the same.

When closed, you will see the device’s three microphones, one isolated at the top and two more at the bottom next to the USB-C input and the main speaker. On the left side, there is a drawer for a physical chip, but with the possibility of having two lines with eSIM. On the opposite side, we have the volume button and the biometric reader incorporated into the power button that responds well and agilely.

In terms of connectivity, we have everything you would expect from a top-of-the-line phone: sixth-generation Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, 5G connectivity and wireless charging.

Screen And Sound

The main screen of the Flip 4 is 6.7 inches, with a small hole for the selfie camera at the top, unlike the Fold 4, which adopts a camera under the panel. The technology used in the Flip is the Dynamic AMOLED 2x of the other top-of-the-line from Samsung, and we have Full HD + resolution with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

BRIGHTNESS

The brightness remains as good as the predecessor. The Flip’s larger screen can offer good visibility in open or bright places. In addition, the Extra Brightness feature allows you to force the brightness in manual mode. In contrast, the HDR10+ will enable you to further boost the brightness and colours in videos that support this technology, found on some streaming services.

Colours

Native colours are great even with the default saturation of Vivid mode. If you prefer something closer to reality, the Natural method desaturates. The screen comes by default in an Adaptive way which regulates the speed of the panel depending on usage and drops below 60 Hz when you don’t touch the screen for a few seconds. The default option also permanently limits the speed to 60 Hz.

Panel

The Flip 4’s external display is the same as its predecessor, a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 260 x 512 pixels and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. It also has an excellent brightness level and guarantees good visibility.

The call speaker acts as a secondary audio channel, so we have stereo sound in the Flip 4. This small speaker at the top of the screen delivers less sound power and lacks a little bass, but the sound output at the bottom ends compensates, and overall we have a good sound balance for music and movies.

Performance

Like the Fold 4, the new Flip also comes equipped with Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, but in this one, there are only 8 GB of RAM, while in the more expensive Samsung model, we have 12 GB for a better multitasking experience.

The new Flip handily outperformed its predecessor in our speed test, which shows a good evolution of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 compared to the Snapdragon 888. However, even though it has the same hardware as the Fold 4, the more expensive model from Samsung was even faster in our test. Is it because of the RAM difference?

Drums

The battery has grown from 3,300 mAh to 3,700 mAh in this generation. It is the same size as the Galaxy S22, but in the Flip 4, the battery will split into two parts. The good news is that with the most current hardware, we had a reduction in consumption which helped to extend the autonomy with an increase of 20% compared to the predecessor.

Cameras

Two 12 MP cameras form the photographic set of the Flip 4 at the rear, one with an ultra-wide lens and an internal 10 MP for selfies. Our first impression is that this is the same set as the predecessor, but the truth is that the primary sensor has changed to a larger one, and the lenses are new.

The Flip 4 captures excellent photos, as you’d expect from a top-of-the-line phone. There’s a lot of recorded detail, close-to-life colours, little noise, and efficient dynamic range that gets even better when HDR is automatically activated.

Software

The Flip 4 comes with Android 12 and One UI 4.1.1, the same version as the Fold 4, but without the taskbar and the extra features of the S Pen. Instead, the focus of the Flip is on its external display, which can be customized, used as a guide for the rear cameras, read notifications, and have quick access to settings.

When you swipe up on the external screen, you will have quick access to Samsung Pay; by swiping down, you can enable or disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, aeroplane mode, and flashlight and adjust the screen brightness.
